Tonight, for the first time in centuries, the Jews of Jerusalem were forbidden to visit the Wailing Wall on the eve of Tisha B’Av. The curfew which has been in effect since the King David Hotel bombing, was not lifted despite appeals by the Jewish community to the British military authorities.
The only visitors to the Wailing Wall, where Jews come to pray on the traditional mourning day, were a dozen aged rabbis who live in the Old City and a group of Jewish journalists possessing the curfew-exempt “white press card.”
