Persecution of the Jews in Germany was described as “economic imbecility” by J. L. Garvin, British publicist and editor of the Observer, in an editorial in that publication today Mr. Garvin predicted that Hitler will have to declare himself against extremism.
“Outside of ethical and humane considerations, the Jewish persecution is economic imbecility and a blunder detrimental to Germany in all international trade and credit matters,” his editorial stated.
“No policy of religious or racial intolerance can prosper a country. Hitler can consolidate himself only by moderation. There is little doubt that Hitler will declare, for reasons of stability, against extremism.”
