When a group of Imperial Fascists, who had hired a hall at Potters Bar, near London, distributed handbills announcing that “Jews and other undesirables would not be admitted” to their meeting, the management of the hotel refunded the money paid for the hall rental and refused to permit the meeting to be held.
A number of comments on the incident appeared in the English press yesterday. The following from the leading editorial of the Manchester Daily Dispatch is typical:
“Apart from the mannerless vulgarity of the handbills, Jew-baiting is a relic of the Middle Ages and will never again be tolerated in this free country.”
The fairness with which Jews are treated in England and the nature of anti-Semitism on the continent were contrasted in a Passover sermon by Jacob Phillips at a synagogue in Manchester. Mr. Phillips praised the English press.
