British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd left here for Cairo today, en route to a meeting of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization at Karachi, Pakistan. On his return trip he will stop off in Israel. Before emplaning today, Mr. Lloyd said that he wanted to discuss many regional problems with Col. Nasser. He said that the Middle East “looms large in our thoughts.”
Political observers believe that the Foreign Secretary will attempt to find out Premier Gamal Abdel Nassers views on the prospects of a settlement of the Palestine problem. Mr. Lloyd is also expected to sound out the Egyptians on his proposal for increasing the number of observers along the Egyptian-Israel borders, as well as to try to win the Nasser regime away from open hostility toward the Bagdad Pact.
