The British Government will formally submit the Palestine question to the United Nations either late tonight or tomorrow, a spokesman for the United Kingdom delegation said this afternoon.
He reported that the State Department had handed a note to the British Embassy in Washington at noon today, expressing the U.S. Government’s agreement to the sunmoning of a special session of the U.N. General Assembly.
The special session is unlikely to be held before May, since after receipt of the British note, the U.N. secretariat has 30 days in which to poll the member states on whether they favor the proposal. The special session must be called within 15 days after a majority of the 55 states have signified their assent.
It is understood that Britain will suggest that the special session be restricted to preliminary discussions on Palestine and arrangements for setting up a commission which would investigate the situation and report its reconmendations to the next regular Assembly meeting in September.
