Wide sections of the British press were sharply criticized today by Home Secretary James Chuter Ede for “a great deal of unnecessary and false sensationalism about reports of Jewish terrorism.”
Replying to William Gallacher, Communist, who asked in the House of Commons who was responsible for the “utterly unfounded” articles, Ede replied that he was convinced that the overwhelming majority of Jews throughout the world deprecated the actions taken by a limited number.
Commenting on the announcement in Rome by Johan J. Smertenko, vice-president of the League for a Free Palestine, that a conference is to be called in Europe shortly to proclaim a provisional Jewish government for Palestine, a spokesman at the London office of the Jewish Agency today declared that the World Zionist Congress is the only authoritative Jewish body which can make significant decisions on Jewish policy regarding Palestine.
