The sum of £5,000 necessary for the first instalment of the amount required to cover the obligations incurred under the new agreement with the Soviet Government, by which the Government is to contribute £2,10s.Od. for every pound sent in by the Federation of Jewish Relief Organisations has already been raised through the New York Appeal, Mr. M. Sohalit, the Honorary Treasurer of the Federation, reported at the last meeting of the Executive held here.
The total amount of £17,500, will be devoted to immediate and reconstructive relief among the sufferers, and will be disbursed by the local Relief Committees of the Federation.
It was decided to continue the campaign to collect the second instalment of £5,000 due under the terms of the agreement, which will mean another sum of £17,600 allocated for the benefit of the Jewish destitute in the Ukraine.
The contributors to the appeal include the Marquis of Reading, Sir Meyer Spielman, Mrs. Flora Sassoon, Mr. Samuel Samuel, M.P., and Dr. Claude G. Montefiore, Mr. Schalit stated. The congregations throughout the country, he said, had assisted the appeal very materially.
ALLIANCE ISRAELITE CONGRATULATED ON SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY
In view of the seventieth anniversary of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, it was decided by the meeting to send a letter of congratulation to the Alliance. The Chairman, Mr. J. Machower referred to the co-operation which had always existed between the Alliance and the Federation in matters affecting the welfare of the Jewish poor in Eastern Europe.
