The Board of Deputies of British Jews is in communication with Canadian authorities here on the position of Israelis bound for Canada who are now stranded at various places. Israelis en route to Canada who have been held up for various technical reasons are now in Rome, Brussels and London. In the last year, 181 Canada-bound Jews left a Jewish home here. The home now shelters 97 Israelis still awaiting clearance to Canada.
(Since May 1945 Canada has admitted more Jewish immigrants in proportion to its population than the United States, Arthur E. Gelber, chairman of the central region of the United Jewish Relief Agencies reported at the 14th regional conference of the Canadian Jewish Congress in Hamilton. He said 33,500 Jews have entered Canada as compared to 130,000 entering the United States in the same period. Most of them have settled in large cities, such as Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Windsar and Hamilton, he stated.)
