A deputation of British Jews made a new approach to Anthony Nutting, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, this week-end to concretize recent statements of British Government spokesmen on Middle East policy.
Mr. Nutting, who has since left for New York to take charge of the British delegation at United Nations headquarters, told the delegation–representing the Board of Deputies of British Jews–that the British Government would continue its efforts to bring about a peaceful settlement between Israel and the Arab states. This pledge was also made by Mr. Nutting and his chief, Foreign Secretary Sir Anthony Eden, last Tuesday in a Commons debate on the Middle East.
RECONSIDERATION ON ARMING ARABS URGED
The Board of Deputies, in an announcement revealing the delegation’s visit, said that it had urged on Mr. Nutting reconsideration of arms for the Arab states; freedom of passage of Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal; and release of the Israeli freighter “Bat Galim,” and its crew of ten, seized by the Egyptians September 28. The delegates called Mr. Nutting’s attention to the intense feelings that have been aroused in world opinion against the Egyptians for arresting Egyptian Jews on trumped-up charges of “communism,” related to Zionism.
(An Egyptian court this week-end ordered the further detention, for 15 days, of the Israeli vessel Bat Galim and its crew of 10, it was reported from Cairo today. The vessel was seized in Suez waters and held on charges that the crew fired on and killed two Egyptian fishermen, a charge which Israel has labelled “mendacious.”)
