The Jewish community of Britain was preparing today to participate in the funeral ceremonies for the late King George VI which will be held next Friday. Prayers for the late King were recited in all synagogues throughout Britain yesterday.
While the King’s body is carried through the streets of London for burial in Windsor Castle next Friday, memorial services will be held at the new West End Synagogue by Dayan I. Grunfeld and Rabbi L. Altmann, deputies for British Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie. In addition, special memorial services will be held in all synagogues on Sunday. February 17. On the same day, a special meeting of the United Synagogue Council will meet to adopt a resolution expressing to Queen Elizabeth the sympathy of the members of the United Synagogue on the death of her father and also expressing their congratulations on her accession to the thorn.
(In Canada the Jewish community joined with the people of the entire British Commonwealth in mourning the death of the King. Memorial services were held in all synagogues and the major Jewish organizations, including the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Zionist Organization of Canada, sent messages of condolence to the Royal family.)
