The attitude of the Rumanian Government toward Jewish emigration and its recent punishment of Jews for “old, trumped-up crimes” of Zionism and interest in Israel were denounced here as a “deplorable, frustrating situation” by R.N. Carvalho, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association.
Speaking at a meeting of the association’s Council, he cited the severe sentences recently imposed on Rumanian Jews and said that the association “protests in the strongest terms against these outrages and can only hope” for the Rumanian Jews who are “so desperate.”
Assailing “their persecutors so impervious to public opinion,” Mr. Carvalho said, “we have taken a position, which we owe to ourselves, to cry out against an injustice when we can do so without worsening it.”
