An appeal for support of the campaign of the Board of Deputies of British Jews for a £54,000 educational fund was issued today by Chief Rabbi J.H. Hertz, Prof. Selig Brodetsky and Sir Robert Waley-Cohen. It warned that “a generation of Jews ignorant of Judaism would be a menace to the community, which would become incapable of playing a part in the national life of the country or making a contribution to the recovery of civilization from Nazi oppression.”
Referring to the recent Oxford conference, the statement stressed the acute danger that 10,000 Jewish children evacuated from London and thousands more evacuated from provincial centers would be lost to the community because of separation from their families and from every Jewish influence.
