The Board of Deputies of British Jews issued a statement here tonight expressing shock at the severity of the sentences and appealing to the Egyptian Government to extend clemency to the convicted men and women. It asked that the lives of the two men sentenced to die be spared and that clemency be shown the other six convicted Jews. “Humanitarian feelings throughout the world will be shocked by the savage sentences,” the Board said.
(In Washington, Israel Ambassador Abba Eban met late today with Deputy Undersecretary of State Robert D. Murphy and it is believed that he brought up the matter of the Cairo sentences.)
