A split within the Board of Deputies of British Jews over the question of boycotting German goods was revealed at a meeting of the Board today when it was voted to table indefinitely a motion condemning Jews who have social or business relations with Germans.
Commenting on the division within the ranks of the organization, Dr. Abraham Cohen, president of the Board, declared that there is, however, no differences over “detestation of Nazi crimes and disappointment that Germany has not yet done anything” to right the wrongs done to the Jews. The delegates also protested against the anti-Semitic demonstrations in Austria leading out of Jewish protests against the showing of a film produced by Veit Harlan, producer of the anti-Semitic Nazi-made film “Jews Suess.”
A resolution appealing to the British Government to use its good offices with the Iraq Government to ensure better treatment for Iraqi Jews was adopted by the Board. Expressing “deep concern” at the “tragic consequences” to Iraqi Jews as a result of recent legislation, the resolution asks that Iraqi Jews who wish to leave the country may do so “in peace without being deprived of their property.” It also calls for an end to “discriminatory legislation” so that those Jews who remain in Iraq can enjoy “equal rights with their fellow citizens.”
