An increase in emigration to Israel from Britain was urged here at a conference organized by the British Zionist Federation and devoted to problems of aliya. The main speaker at the conference was former Prime Minister Moshe Sharett.
Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion of Israel, in a special message to the conference, stressed that Israel “requires the initiative, talent and knowledge in addition to the spiritual, cultural and traditional wealth to be brought to us by the tens of thousands of Jews coming from the free countries.” The Prime Minister expressed the hope that an ever increasing wave of immigrants from the Western countries would come to Israel and that many other countries with large Jewish communities would profit from the example of British Zionists.
Mr. Sharett told the delegates he did not come to launch an appeal for aliya from Great Britain “as I consider that begging you to come to Israel is unworthy of our cause.” He stressed that there was no higher and nobler thing than for a man to decide to make Israel his home.
