Appointment of the Rt. Hon. Sir Lionel Leonard Cohen, Lord Justice of Appeal, as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, was approved here by the King. Justice Cohen succeeds Lord Simonds who was named Lord High Chancellor in the Churchill Government. As a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, Justice Cohen will take a seat in the House of Lords.
The new Lord of Appeal, who is 62, is the son of the late Sir Leonard Lionel Cohen. He was called to the bar in 1913 and was made a King’s Counsel in 1929. He was named Lord Justice of Appeal in 1946, and a Privy Councillor, after serving as a Justice of the High Court, Chancery Division.
Sir Lionel served in the British Army during World War I. He has been active in Jewish communal life in England. He was vice-president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews from 1934-1938 and was also vice-president of the Jewish Board of Guardians and active in the United Synagogue.
