Opposition to the statement by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, acting president of the World Jewish Congress, that the Congress is the only existing organization symbolizing the unity of the Jewish people, was expressed here last night by E.S. Montagu, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association.
Speaking to a meeting of the A.J.A. Council, Mr. Montagu suggested that the Jewish bodies of the world should meet frequently to discuss and decide upon common action, but should not agree that one permanent body can at any time speak on behalf of all Jews. He also took issue with Dr. Goldmann’s belief that had a strong all-embracing Jewish organization existed the problem of negotiating reparations claims from Germany would have been settled long ago.
