Several speakers who participated last night in the debate on the Speech from the Throne in the House of Commons urged on the Government a policy which would combine loyalty to Britain’s commitments to the State of Israel with measures to establish friendly relations with all the Arab States.
Hugh Gaitskell, leader of the Labor Opposition, warned the Government not “to try once again to base its Middle East policy on support of certain Arab States against other Arab States.”
Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who replied to the debate, pledged that Brita in would remain faithful to its Bagdad Pact alliances and insisted that this pact was not a threat to any Arab country. He stressed that “we want our relations with Iraq to continue on a basis of friendship and cooperation.”
