Two British submarines arrived in Palestine late yesterday, and anchored off-shore between Tel Aviv and Jaffa, adding under-seas craft to the imposing array of British naval and military might which has been pouring into this country within the past week.
Reports from London indicate that further contingents from the Navy, Army and R.A.F. are being rushed here. One report says that men of a parachute battalion stationed in Wiltshire were suddenly recalled from their leaves and are now en route to an embarkation point.
Meanwhile, the tenseness on the Tel Aviv-Jaffa border, which had resulted in both Arabs and Jews fleeing into the centers of their respective cities, has been lessened as a result of publication by the Tel Aviv municipality of police assurances that there was no reason to fear outbreaks.
However, Tewfik Hussieni, acting chairman of the Palestine Arab Party, issued a statement today declaring that if Jewish immigration and land purchases are not immediately suspended, the tranquility of the Arab countries will be imperiled. Yesterday, the vice-president of the party cabled to Mohammed Ali Jinnah, head of the Indian Moslem League, urging his support of the Palestine Arabs, and to Abdul Rahman Azzam Bey, Secretary General of the Arab League, asserting that Jews are threatening to take over the country and urging that the Palestine issue not be postponed.
The appeal to the Arab League secretary followed a statement by Azzam Bey in London, in which he declared that the League would like to see the Palestine question shelved for a year.
Mussa el Alami, the unofficial Palestine delegate to the Arab League, is reported today to be planning to leave for Bagdad to confer with Iraquian leaders. It is understood that he will confer with Palestine High Commissioner Lord Gort before his departure for the Iraq capital.
A French Telegraph Service dispatch from Beirut today says that Lebanese Premier Al Sulh told Parliament that the Lebanese Government is hostile to the idea of Jewish immigration to Palestine or Lebanon. At the same time, Foreign Minister Frangieh said that the Lebanase minister in Washington has been instructed to inform the White House that Lebanon disapproves American “encouragement” of Zionism.
