Armed guards and the barbed wire encircling the two Exodus camps near here–Poppendorf and Am Stau–will be removed within the next few days, it was learned here today. The British officials have already asked the camp committees to arrange for the setting up of a Jewish police force.
This latest development is interpreted here as being an admission by the British that their attempts to break the refugees’ morale by screening have collapsed. It is generally believed that the British now hope that by allowing the Jews freedom of exit, they will eventually disperse. Doubt, however, has been raised concerning the amount of freedom that the Jews will be allowed in the British zone.
Last week’s cut in food rations has left the refugees in the camps constantly hungry. Despite efforts by the Jewish relief agencies to make up for the lack of clothing supplies, many of the refugees in the two camps are cold and do not have sufficient clothing.
