The London News Chronicle today carries an editorial calling for speedy action by the British and American governments in connection with the offer by Regent Horthy to release some Jews. “Acceptance of the offer may save thousands of lives,” the paper says. “We must make our response swift and wholehearted.”
The paper’s diplomatic correspondent, commenting on the Horthy proposal, says that “many Jewish organizations believe that a time limit is inherent in Horthy’s offer. It seems certain that unless moves are made to get out as many Jews as can be evacuated, the Germans will not hesitate to continue their ghastly work.”
