Philip Noel-Baker, British Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs, answering queries in Parliament about British policy in relation to Akaba, today said that the government is determined to see Transjordan “protected against aggression” under the terms of the Anglo-Trans Jordan treaty.

Noel-Baker said that the other Commonwealth governments were not Informed when Britain sent a military force to Akaba because these governments are not parties to the Anglo-Transjordan pact. In response to urging by Earl Winterton, Conservative, that the treaty provisions be adhered to despite any opposition by “M.P.’s having a racial affiliation with Israel,” Noel-Baker said that this was a matter for the Foreign Secretary.
