Parliament was urged today to follow the example of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives and issue a warning to Hungary concerning the oppression of Jews and other minorities.
The lead editorial in the influential Manchester Guardian says that “the time has come when the United Nations should address the most explicit warnings to the Hungarian Government and to those obeying its instructions.” The editorial points out that the United Nations are now much more powerful than they were in March, when Foreign Secretary Eden unsuccessfully warned Hungary to desist from further atrocities.
“Now is the time to strike hard by all means of propaganda – wireless, leaflets and accompanying bombs,” the Guardian continues. “We must drive home to the rulers of Hungary and to all who abet them that they will be held personally responsible for the cruelties.” Reviewing the action taken against Hungarian Jews up until now, the editorial concludes: “It will be a crowning tragedy if within a few months of the defeat of Germany, we see the sacrifice of the last big group of European unfortunates.”
