In editorials and dispatches from Jerusalem, British newspapers today stressed the gravity of the security situation in pales tine and the tremendous loss of prestige suffered by great Britain through its failure to maintain order. The general tenor of the editorials was that until order was restored there could be no question of implementing any plan looking toward a permanent solution of the arab Jewish conflict.
Describing the size of the British expeditionary force, the Daily Telegraph declared it seemed “astonishing” that although the arab insurrection had assumed considerable proportions in July it was not until September that there was a substantial influx of reinforcements. The News-Chronicle asserted that the Government had ample warning for many years that the “pales tine pot one day would boil over,” adding that “its dilatory handling of the matter contributed in no small degree to the present crisis.”
