Reorganization of the Coordinating Committee for Refugees was effected today with the resignation of Lord Hailey, chairman, and the committee’s executive board. At the suggestion of Lord Hailey the organization henceforth will be known as the Joint Consultative Committee for Refugees. Lord Hailey, who is 65, resigned for personal reasons. The other resignations followed his plea for reorganization of the board to include direct representation of German Jews, the Christian Council, the Czecho-Slovak Committee and other international organizations.
The first home for aged refugees in the British Empire will be opened in Manchester on Sunday by Otto M. Schiff, president of the German Refugees’ Committee, it was announced today. Fifty inmates, selected from 2,000 applicants, will include former lawyers, doctors, merchants and two ministers, ranging from 60 to 84 years of age.
Mary Borden, the American-born author, expressed the hope that Nazi persecution of Jews and Christians would unite both groups as never before, stressing the sympathy of Catholics for persecuted Jews. She addressed a Zionist women’s gathering yesterday.
