Members of the British Government were reported here to have advised Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad of Egypt that his country should exercise restraint in connection with the Middle East deadlock, it was reliably reported here today. Mr. Riad conferred here with Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart and reportedly asked for United Kingdom support against Israel in the UN General Assembly.
The Egyptian diplomat told the press that the Arab-Israeli situation was “very serious and dangerous” and warfare could erupt at any time. Appearing last night on the BBC’s “Twenty-Four Hours” program, he insisted that Egypt had no military agreement with Russia “and we don’t ask Russia to fight for us and we don’t expect her to take any active part in our wars.” Mr. Riad placed the burden of aggression on Israel and said further bloodshed could be avoided only if Israel implemented the Nov. 22, 1967 resolution which, he claimed, calls for Israel’s unconditional withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories. Deputy Prime Minister Yigal Allon of Israel was to appear on the BBC program tonight to answer Mr. Riad. He had a private meeting today with Prime Minister Harold Wilson, a friend of many years standing, and met with Peter Shaw. Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.
