British authorities here confessed to an uncertainty as to the real motive prompting King Hussein of the Hedjas to go from Mecca to Amman, the Transjordania capital for the conference opening today.
There are those who believe that the King is simply extending his trip to Amman from Koweit at the head of the Persian gulf where he met with representatives of the chief Arab States to settle the boundaries of the Arab territories. Sultan Nejd, and
representatives of Transjordania dn Irak were present at the conference under the Chairmanship of Colonel Knox, the political officer of the Persian Gulf.
Reports from Amman say that the city is decorated for the reception to the King who is expected there Monday, and that deputations from all quarters of the Middle East are proceeding to the Transjordania capital.
In addition to Sir Herbert Samuel, Sir Gilbert Clayton, his General Secretary, and Governor Storrs of Jerusalem are coming from Palestine.
King Feisul of Mesopotamia is not coming to the conference it is reported, because of the troubles of Mesopotamia, but primarily because there is not much love lost between him and his father, and the continued hostility between himself and his brother Abdullah, the ruler of Transjordania.
It is rumored here that the French authorities in Syria are prepared to offer the Syrian throne to Emir Zeid, the youngest of Hussein’s sons. Emir Feisul, the second son, the present King of Mesopotamia which is under British protection, sat upon that throne for three months in 1920, but was put to flight by the French when he asserted his complete independence of French domination.
