The United Synagogue Council last night unanimously endorsed Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie’s message to Israeli President Chaim Weizmann, “rejoicing” in the restoration of the Jewish state and hoping for the establishment of peace and understanding among the nations,”
The unanimous approval by the largest and most influential synagogue body in England marks a decisive change of attitude towards Palestine in non-Zionist quarters since the last Council meeting, when a pro-Israel resolution was ruled out of order. Council chairman Sir Robert Waley-Cohen, in urging the unanimous adoption of the message, stressed the necessity for the United Synagogue’s confining itself to religious and charitable work, but added that the resolution “expressed the religious outlook of our Palestine hopes.”
A national “parliament of Youth parley,” representing 1,000,000 young people of various political and social beliefs in Britain, today adopted a resolution expressing regrets that the government’s “attitude to the problem of Palestine had not been calculated to uphold the authority of the United Nations.” The resolution was introduced by A, Gragman, president of the Federation of Zionist Youth, and was supported by Conservative and Laborite organizations and by the National Association of labor Students Federations.
