The British Trades Union Congress went on record today as favoring direct Israel-Arab negotiations to settle differences arising from the Six-Day War last June.
(In a cable to the Congress, Aharon Becker, secretary general of the Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, and other Israeli labor leaders, hailed the action, expressing Israeli labor’s “great satisfaction.” The cable said the decision had “laid the ghost” of Ernest Bevin, the late British Foreign Secretary who fought Zionist aspirations for a Jewish State in the pre-war period.)
LIBERAL INTERNATIONAL ALSO CALLS FOR DIRECT TALKS
Direct Arab-Israeli negotiations including international guarantees of frontiers, and the settlement of the Middle Eastern refugee problem as a “world responsibility” were advocated in a resolution adopted today at the 20th anniversary congress of the Liberal International, held at Oxford University.
The congress held that “there can be no lasting peace in the Middle East without direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab countries.”
