An overwhelming majority of the British people favor immediate Government aid to those refugees who are able to flee from occupied countries in Europe, it is revealed today with publication of the results of a Gallup Poll, which asked whether the government should help, what steps it should take and whether the refugees should be allowed to enter Britain.
Seventy-eight percent of those queried desired that the Government should render assistance to the refugees. Of these, 41% urged their unlimited entry into Britain, 13% opposed such immigration, primarily on the basis that there is not sufficient food in the country and the others had no opinion on the subject. Questioned as what conditions should govern the stay of those refugees admitted to the United Kingdom, 40% urged that they be allowed to remain until they could be settled elsewhere, 28% felt they should stay until the end of the war and 10% were indefinite.
