The Hope of Israel Center of the Bronx yesterday announced plans for a Jewish sports carnival at the Yankee Stadium on Sept 16. The proceeds will be added to the building fund of the new community center which the congregation is erecting at Gerard Avenue and 164th street, the Bronx.
The purpose of the carnival, in addition to raising funds, is to show the progress made by Jews in the field of athletics and sports, according to the sponsors. Outstanding Jewish representatives in boxing and track have been invited to participate. A soccer game between an all-star Jewish team and a picked Irish team led by the international Gaelic football star, Andy Furlong, will feature the program.
Albert Goldman, former Commissioner of Plants and Structures, is chairman of the committee sponsoring the enterprise. The Bronx Council of Rabbis also has appointed a committee to assist the Center officials in making the project a success. This committee consists of Rabbi Alexander Basel, Dr. Samuel Benjamin, Rabbi Max Drob, Rabbi David S. Savits and Rabbi Henry Schoor.
