The law under which the District Attorney’s office took action is the recently enacted Chapter 445 of the Laws of 1934, introduced by Senator Lazarus Joseph, which provides that any person who holds religious services for his own pecuniary gain or for that of an organization other than a recognized religious association or congregation is guilty of a misdemeanor.
