Thousands of Jews throughout the Borough of Brooklyn will attend special services in observance of Tisha B’ab this Saturday, it was announced yesterday by the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities.
These services will be conducted by the affiliates of the twenty-five constituent agencies of the Federation in cooperation with synagogues, temples, community centers, YM and YWHA’s of the borough.
Commemorating the fall of Jerusalem, Tisha B’ab is a day of fasting and mourning for Jews throughout the world.
In calling for united observance of the Holy Day by Brooklyn Jews the Federation issued the following statement:
“At this critical time, when thousands of our Jewish families are facing economic hardship, when our people in Germany are being disfranchised and deprived of the simplest opportunities for themselves and their families, when hundreds of thousands of Jews in Poland, in Rumania and Latvia are persecuted and discriminated against, the Jews of Brooklyn should show their sympathy with their downtrodden coreligionists the world over in a most extraordinary way. This is what we aim to do in these special programs.”
The most solemn part of the services, declared the Federation, will be the chanting of plaintive melodies and the reading of Jeremiah’s Lamentations.
