Tudor Arghezi, an editorial writer on the Rumanian daily newspaper “Informatia,” has been arrested in Bucharest for criticizing the government’s action in arresting Dr. William Filderman, prominent leader of Rumanian Jewry, it was learned here today.
The Nazi news agency, DNB, stated that “Arghezi was arrested for writing an article in which he tried to glorify Dr. Filderman’s activities.” Dr. Filderman was arrested last week on the charge that he had urged Rumanian Jews not to pay the special tax of 4,000,000,000 lei which the pro-Nazi government has imposed upon the Jewish population. It was reported that Premier Ion Antonescu has ordered that the Jewish leader be deported to a camp in Transnistria.
A report from Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, reaching here today stated that the Bulgarian authorities have issued instructions ordering converted Jews to wear yellow badges and to register in the census which is now being taken of the Jewish population in the country.
The Pester Lloyd, Budapest newspaper, reports that the birthrate of Jews in Hungary has fallen sharply. During all of 1942 only 1,601 Jewish babies were born in Budapest. The proportion is even smaller in the provincial towns, the paper states.
