The death-toll of the victims of the panic that occurred in the Poradim synagogue in the women’s gallery on the eve of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) has been placed by the authorities at ten Jewish women. Hopes are held out by the medical authorities that all of the injured, who number about fifty women, will recover.
The panic began when a frightened woman worshipper in the gallery yelled “fire,” when a short circuit in the electric lights occurred. In the rush for the exits, the women were trampled under foot and the women’s gallery collapsed.
