The Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association today sent a protest to Interior Minister Felipe Urdapilleta against the invesion of its headquarters last night by armed police ostensibly searching for guns. Several of the organization’s members were arrested, and persons in the building were insulted, the protest said. Those arrested were subsequently released.
The police action followed an evening of rioting by persons supporting Col. Juan Peron for president. After demonstrations in the center of the city, they marched into the Jewish quarter, shouting anti-Semitic remarks and manhandling passers-by. Several Jews were severely beaten. Police did nothing to halt the rioting, intervening only to arrest Jews who offered resistance to the hoodlums.
