The buffalo, once a common sight in the swampy areas of the Holy Land, is fast becoming as rare as the bison in America, and will vanish entirely with a few years, it is revealed in the Government’s livestock census.
The report shows that the 7,402 head of buffalo in 1932 have decreased to 4,540. They are confined almost exclusively to the Safed area, which includes the Huleh swamps, recently acquired by the Jewish Agency for Palestine for colonization.
With the drainage of the swamps in the next few years, Palestine’s buffaloes are expected to disappear entirely.
