General Jekoff, commander-in-chief of the Bulgarian army during the World War, paid a tribute to the valor of his Jewish soldiers at a memorial service held in the Great Synagogue here for Jewish war dead.
800 members of the Union of Jewish war veterans attended the service, together with representatives of the Jewish organizations and institutions in the country, and a number of military and civic leaders, including in addition to General Jekoff, Generals Lazaroff and Todoroff; the Lord Mayor of Sofia, M. Iwanoff; the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, M. Radoff, and many military officers and representatives of old comrades associations.
“I can testify,” said General Jekoff, “that in no country did the Jews at the front during the War show so much bravery as in Bulgaria.”
The Chief Rabbi, Dr. Hananel, said in his reply: “We appreciate your testimony, for you are certainly the man best qualified to know. We Bulgarian Jews did no more than our duty to the Fatherland.”
