Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov joined hundreds of Jews to commemorate the refusal of the citizens of Bulgaria to send Jews to the Nazi death camps. The weekend event marked the 59th anniversary of the day when ordinary Bulgarians, led by politicians and Christian clergymen, protested and effectively prevented the deportation of some 8,500 Jews who had been rounded up by German Nazis in the city of Plovdiv.
