The Nazi authorities in Warsaw have levied a fine of 1,000,000 zlotys ($200,000 at pre-war rates) on the Jewish community in connection with the murder of a Polish policeman who was in the service of the Gestapo. The fine, first set at 300,000 zlotys and later increased to a million, was defrayed from blocked Jewish bank accounts by order of the Gestapo. The levy was followed by the execution of 53 Jews who resided in the houses 9 and 11 Nalewki Street, in one of which the Nazi police declared they had found a Jew hiding who was responsible for the alleged murder and had escaped from jail.
