Acting United Nations Palestine mediator Dr. Ralph J. Bunche was honored last night with an award for distinguished service by the American Association for the United Nations at a Waldorf-Astoria dinner attended by 1,000 persons. He declared that a peaceful solution to the conflict requires compromises by both Jews and Arabs.
A letter to Dr. Bunche from President Truman emphasized that in his handling of the Near East dispute, Dr. Bunche upheld the dignity and integrity of the United Nations “under unusual circumstances.”
U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie, who also addressed the dinner guests, asserted that the world organization “will not tolerate any further recourse to force in the settlement of Palestine differences,” adding that “any party doing so will bear full responsibility and may find its course highly unprofitable.”
