A vivid commentary upon the present state of affairs in Arab towns is provided in the news that the post office at Ludd, railroad junction on the Jaffa-Haifa-Jerusalem lines, has been closed down because of lack of business.

In Talmudical times and in the Middle Ages this was a famous and busy trading center being known as Tagarei-Ludd. But in the centuries of indolence and neglect that have ensued, it has lost all of its one time mercantile importance.

Another report comes from Nazareth that rents are falling there by fifteen to twenty per cent. This, too, may be compared with the threatened rise in rents in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, due to increased settlement. A Rents Committee, consisting of Eric Mills, C. B. E., Assistant Chief Secretary; Amin Bey Abdul Hadi, F. J. Salmon and Gibrail Katul, all government officials, has been appointed to inquire into and report upon the rents “ramp” in the principal cities, and has been meeting at Jaffa.
