The 25th General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, representing 800 Jewish communities in the United States and Canada, will open here tomorrow to discuss communal needs in this country as well as aid to Israel and Jewish communities in other countries.
Attended by Jewish community leaders from all parts of the United States and Canada the Assembly will devote four days to intensive discussions of major problems confronting the Jewish community. A special session will be devoted to the situation now faced by Israel. Avraham Harman, member of the Jewish Agency executive, who flew from Israel, will report on the latest developments there. Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, will analyze the UJA program for 1957 in the light of current developments in the Middle East.
“Attendance at the gathering has been stimulated by fast-breaking events in the Middle East and by the urgent needs of services and programs here at home,” Herbert R. Abeles, CJFWF president, reported today. “An unusually large number of federation and organization presidents and executives, chairmen of major committees and professional executives arrived to participate in the deliberations.”
Assembly sessions will deal, among other things, with problems facing the Jewish community in campaigning, budgeting, leadership, personnel, and community relations. The assembled Jewish leaders will also mark the 25th Anniversary of the Council at a special dinner meeting at which prominent speakers will review the Council’s activities over the years and set the perspectives of the next generation.
