The Cabinet discussed today a report by the commission of inquiry set up to investigate the Maalot tragedy. No details were given. The 60-page report was said however to be only mildly critical of the way the security forces handled the situation. According to sources, the report points out shortcomings in the communications between the political and other bodies that handled the negotiations with the terrorists.
The report will be submitted tomorrow to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Security Committee along with the government’s decision. The government will later make an official statement to the Knesset and will publish the full report except for matters dealing with security.
Foreign Minister Yigal Allon reported to the Cabinet on the information drive being carried out through diplomatic channels and in international news media to explain Israel’s motives for the air raids on terrorist bases in Lebanon. The Cabinet authorized the Ministerial Economic Committee to decide on whether to introduce daylight saving time during the summer months.
