Negotiations over the opening of a direct air route between Ben Gurion Airport and Cairo Airport have reached an “advanced stage,” according to sources here. Yediot Achronot reported yesterday that two companies, TWA and Olympic, expressed interest in operating the route. If the negotiations succeed, there will be several regular flights between the two countries The fare is now estimated at $120 each way.

It was also reported yesterday that beginning next month, the Egyptian newspapers will be sold in Israel. The papers will be shipped through the EI Arish border point, mainly for sale in the administered territories.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry’s special office for Egyptian visas has already received and processed hundreds of applications from ordinary Israelis to visit Egypt, an official told the Jewish telegraphic Agency today. The office has been set up in premises close to the ministry compound in the Romema section of Jerusalem.
