Eighty police and firemen yesterday conducted searches in the buildings of the Jewish newspapers, the Jewish Daily Forward and The Day, following an anonymous warning received by the two newspapers over the telephone that the structures would be blown up.
The caller, who identified himself as “a rabbi,” said that the buildings were mined and the bombs would explode between 1:30 and 2 p.m. However, the search conducted by the police and the firemen from collar to roof produced no evidence of any bomb or any explosive. About 1,000 persons were evacuated from the two buildings during the search.
