A call to Milwaukee Jews to rally to the synagogue and strengthen Israel in this time of social distress has just been issued by five leading local rabbis. The call, part of a widespread “back to the temple” movement in this city, was published in the Milwaukee Jewish press and in synagogue bulletins.
“Throughout the long centuries of Jewish endurance and achievement the synagogue has stood in the center of Jewish life,” the call points out in part. “Cognizant of the social distress and bewilderment which engulf people today, we feel all the more keenly today the importance of a genuine popular return to this age-old fountain-head of Jewish inspiration.”
“We therefore call upon all who love Judaism to rally to the synagogue and strengthen their own morale and that of their own people by entering into the joy and discipline of the Sabbath service…..”
The call was signed by Rabbis Joseph L. Baron, Samuel Hirshberg, Philip Kleinman, Morton Deutsch and Charles Rubinstein.
