A total of 3,588 Jews immigrated to Canada during the first nine months of 1967, including 1,863, more than half the total, who were either citizens or permanent residents of Israel, it was disclosed in figures published by the Department of Manpower and Immigration. The figure for the corresponding period of 1966 was 2,233 Jewish immigrants of whom 1,077 came from Israel.
Tom Kent, Deputy Minister of Manpower and Immigration, said that his department’s report for the third quarter of 1967 (July-September) was the last one to contain data in tabular form on the ethnic composition of the immigrant movement. Deletion of such data in the future, he said, was “to make it completely clear that race and religion play no part in immigrant selection.”
