The possibility of a ban on European immigration to Canada is seen in a statement made here by Premier Mackenzie King during a campaign address. Asked whether he favored the prohibition of immigration to Canada until such time as those people in Canada who are willing and able to work find employment, the Liberal leader replied in the affirmative. He added that in the future the Dominion government proposed to let the provincial governments say more and more what immigration they wanted.
Stoppage of immigration was also advocated by E. W. Beatty, president of the Canadian Pacific Railways. In an interview here he said that immigration from the United States and Canada must be stopped for the time being at least. In the meantime Canadian labor, which has always supported the attitude of the American Federation of Labor regarding immigration, is also demanding that Canada closes its doors to immigrants owing to the unemployment situation.
