Mrs. Ellen L. Fairclough, Minister of Citizenship and immigration, has turned down requests for broader consideration of applications for the admission to Canada of Jewish refugees from Egypt and Hungary and emigrants from Poland, Iraq and Lebanon, the Canadian Jewish Congress revealed today. The requests for liberalized treatment were made by the CJC and the Jewish immigrant Aid Society in a joint memorandum to the Ministry.
Mrs. Fairclough’s reply noted that Canada lacked facilities for complete examinations in the countries from which the immigrants would be coming. As a result, certain classes of relatives of Canadian residents and citizens cannot be handled at the present time, she noted, nor is it possible to deal with applications of unsponsored immigrants from these countries. The Minister said at the same time that Canada’s immigration code was in the process of review and she promised to keep the CJC-JIAS memorandum in mind.
